We all know that trying to cram items into a space that isn’t big enough can be stressful, which is why self-storage can keep your possessions stored and safe until you are ready to use them again. Typically, self-storage is great if you’re moving house or office and need to store items until you get to your new location.

Top tips for using self storage
Planning on moving home?
Although sticking your items into a container may seem like a breeze, there are some important steps you should consider. We have put together some top tips for when you come to use self-storage.
Tip 1 – Purchase the correct type of boxes
It may seem like a good idea but don’t try and save money by using boxes that are old and broken. If you are transferring a large number of items, you are at risk of the boxes collapsing. Make sure you use firm, plastic storage boxes or cardboard ones that are brand new. You can get cheap storage boxes from retailers such as Homebase or Ikea; or if you’re storing with us, we can provide storage boxes for you.
Tip 2 – Take care with fragile items
Items such as glass and china are most likely to break if a box is accidentally dropped. Make sure you wrap all fragile items in bubble wrap, store in a strong box and use tissue paper to pack them tightly. This way if the box is dropped or falls the items are less likely to break. You can make use of bubble wrap from any recent parcels you may have received or alternatively, you can purchase it from a number of retailers including Argos.
Tip 3 – Label, label, label
We would recommend labeling your boxes with the items that are inside to help make the process of finding and unpacking a whole lot easier. For example, you could label one box cushions and another box kitchen utensils. Another little tip is to draw up a small plan of where abouts certain boxes are stored in your storage container. If you are doing a few trips at a time it will make finding the box you need a breeze. If you have kids, keep them entertained and ask them to create some cool labels for your boxes!
Tip 4 – Organisation
If you get to your storage container and start throwing in boxes left, right and centre, it’s going to be a mess and pretty hard to access. We would advise that when you start storing your boxes, leave a pathway down the middle of the container. This way you will be able to reach the back for items without climbing over things. Keep frequently needed items at the front of the container so that you can access them easily.
Tip 5 – Stacking
You’re probably thinking, “Why does it matter how my boxes are stacked?”
Well, unless you want to return to find your storage container in shambles, listen carefully. We would recommend that you stack your boxes so that the heaviest items are on the bottom. This will provide a stable base for everything going on top and will prevent anything from falling.
Tip 6 – Basic tools
The last tip we would advise on is taking some basic necessary tools. This includes screwdrivers or utility knives that will allow you to dismantle beds or furniture or open secure boxes. You can purchase small, handy tool kits from retailers such as Halfords or even Ebay.
